Baby Boomers Willing to Delay Gratification Now For a Better Lifestyle in their Golden Years

New MainStay Investments Survey Finds that 76 Percent of Pre-Retirees are Willing to Work Longer and Save More Today to Live More Comfortably Tomorrow

NEW YORK,/PRNewswire/ — The quest for “the good life” continues to drive Baby Boomers to sacrifice today, so that they can enjoy the finer things tomorrow. According to MainStay Investments’ Boomer Retirement Lifestyle Study, 76 percent of the Baby Boomers surveyed (age 45-65 that are not yet retired) say they are willing to spend less now to invest for a more comfortable lifestyle in the future.

“When it comes to lifestyle, Baby Boomers are redefining what constitutes a basic need and what they consider a luxury. We have clearly expanded beyond the three traditionally thought-of necessities – clothes, food and shelter. Our study aims to explore the things in life that are most valued, and to analyze what Boomers say they will do to continue to enjoy a more robust life in retirement,” said Matthew Leung, director and head of practice management programs at MainStay Investments.

Daily stress and worry plummet after age 50

By Sharon Jayson, USA TODAY

After 50, daily stress and worry take a dive and daily happiness increases, according to an analysis of more than 340,000 adults questioned about the emotions they experienced “yesterday.”

The research, published online today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shows that young adults experience more negative emotions more frequently than those who are older. Negative emotions, such as stress and anger, are similar in that they consistently decline with age, but worry holds steady until around 50, when it sharply drops, the study shows.

More baby boomers expected to spend golden years south of border

BY KATHLEEN KIRKWOOD – CONTRA COSTA TIMES

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Brad Billingsley could have been waiting for his tee time at an Arizona golf course.

Instead, the former Lafayette, Calif., resident and his wife Linda were in a lagoon off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, snapping photos of gray whales bobbing next to their small charter boat.

“Every day, it’s an adventure here,” Brad Billingsley said. “It’s added 20 years to my life.”

Brad, 62, and Linda Billingsley, 61, are among the “silver surge” of baby boomers seeking alternative retirement nests in Mexico, according to a recent report by the International Community Foundation.

Finnish baby boomers caught in mid-life crisis

Almost half of all over 50s in Finland say their lives are dissatisfying and that they are victims of an over-hurried and unjust world. A new survey from consulting firm Redera and pollster Taloustukimus has revealed that Finland’s aging baby-boomers are largely negative about their present and future prospects in the country.

YLE reports that the affected age bracket is worried about financial stability and achieving success, and concerned that their advanced years may stop them achieving their goals. The research found that the level of dissatisfaction was not dependent on education, income of even health, with all social groups expressing the same concerns evenly.

Self-Esteem Drops After Retirement

By LiveScience Staff

Bad vision and other physical ailments aren’t the only things that seem to get worse as people grow old. Self-esteem also declines around the age of retirement, a new study finds.

The study involved 3,617 American men and women ranging in age from 25 to 104. Self-esteem was lowest among young adults, but increased throughout adulthood, peaking at age 60, before it started to decline.

Several factors might explain this trend, the researchers say.

“Midlife is a time of highly stable work, family and romantic relationships. People increasingly occupy positions of power and status, which might promote feelings of self-esteem,” said study author Richard Robins of the University of California, Davis. “In contrast, older adults may be experiencing a change in roles such as an empty nest, retirement and obsolete work skills in addition to declining health.”

Boomer Love: How is the ‘Free Love’ Generation Doing Now?

By Jan Yager, Ph.D.
ConsumerAffairs.com

Our younger years were defined by protests, free thinking, changing the world, and, for some, by free love.
But by 2006, a U.S. Census Bureau analysis that looked at the 78 million Baby Boomers just as the first of us turned 60, found that 65.6% were in traditional marriages, 17% were divorced, 3% separated and 2.7% were widowed. Only 11.7% were single and never married.

What this means is that being, or trying to become, a couple may define the lion’s share of “Boomer love” today but there are certainly millions of single Boomers who are either still looking for love or relying on friends and family for their close connections.

Nearly Half of Finnish Baby-Boomers Dissatisfied with Life

Nearly half of Finns over the age of 50 say they are dissatisfied with their lives. A new survey reveals that nearly 50 percent of baby-boomers feel that they’ve become victims of an unjust and over-hurried world.

The survey was conducted by the pollster Taloustutkimus and the consulting firm Redera.

“People who considered themselves victims felt the world had become too rushed, too selfish and too unstable. They sought more security and compassion,” explains Redera CEO Isa Merikallio, who facilitated the survey.

This group of people, says Merikallio, are concerned about big successes, and stress about their age and finances without celebrating life’s smaller victories.

“For example, the victims’ group might yearn for retirement. But once they finally retire, they find it doesn’t solve their problems and might actually make them worse,” says Merikallio.

Forget the prophets of doom – I’m proud to be a baby boomer

The world is a happier place thanks to my generation, and the next will look after itself, says Boris Johnson.

By Boris Johnson

Oh the shame of being a baby boomer. What a bunch of shysters we seem to be.

We are the most selfish, greedy, job-hogging, pension-grabbing bunch of egomaniacs history has ever seen. Here we are, cackling to ourselves in our overpriced homes and exploiting our political power to shaft the younger generation. We use our demographic throw-weight to skew the welfare system in our favour and above all we are squandering the natural resources of the planet. You know that Goya picture of the giant eating a naked human being?

That’s us, all right – Saturn devouring his children. Or at least, that is the portrait presented by my brilliant old friend and colleague David Willetts in his new book, The Pinch, which has been received with rapture by one and all. You can see his point. We baby boomers – those of us born in the great bulge of fecundity in the Fifties and Sixties – have had it easy. We are the ones whose extravagant pension entitlements must now be met by our kids.

Babyboomer hobbies – volunteering and complaining

By Anne Delaney

Forget retirement villages and retiring to a quiet peaceful life – the baby-boomers have a very different idea of retirement than those who’ve gone before according to noted demographer Bernard Salt.

Regional communities might just have their work cut out for them trying to meet the needs of this group. Keeping them occupied is at the top of the list – or watch out for the complaint letter in the local paper.

He says the idea of staying at home when they retire is not really that different to generations gone by, but their expectations from the community are very different.

“They’re very happy where they are and they intend on retiring in the family home.

“The vast majority of people don’t have the means or the inclination or the will to leave their local area to go set up house somewhere else.”
